Paul Young's Young @ Heart
"As a young boy, I remember being very afraid of the water. It took lots of encouragement from several trusted teachers before I eventually jumped into the pool." Learning to swim is an excellent analogy for the mentoring of new principals.

Evelyn-Cortez Ford's Coaching Teachers To Be Leaders
Describing teacher leadership is a little bit like trying to pin down a wave. So it is no wonder that teachers can have a difficult time talking about leadership. To help teachers talk about their leadership, principals can help them create personal leadership statements.

Larry Bell: Somebody Needs You!
You never want to surprise at-promise kids when they have to take a standardized test. By planning simulated test days, you work out the kinks and kids know what to expect. When the actual test day comes around, they can relax and focus on the job at hand.

"Guess Who's Coming to Lunch" at School?
Guess Who's Coming to Lunch is a great way for students to interact with leaders whose decisions directly impact their community. Over lunch, speakers -- school officials, politicians, and other invited guests -- talk for 15-20 minutes and then answer questions.

    Focus On…
    Discipline
Handling issues of student discipline is part of a principal's job. Dealing with individual issues -- and developing school-wide policies and approaches -- are two elements of the task. The articles in this archive share stories and practical tips that will help you develop and manage a school-wide discipline plan.

    The Principal Poet
Education World's resident poet, Mr. Ivan, presents a poem that is sure to bring grins to school leaders everywhere. This week's poem is "Crayons."
I use magenta for my homework,
And for science I use green.
But for spelling I need yellow
So my mistakes are hardly seen…

    Best Books for School Leaders
The First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher
Harry and Rosemary Wong are, of course, among the deans of education writing in America, and this book is evidence of why. In addition to providing a lot of practical advice -- brought to life with more than 300 photos and illustrations -- the book focuses on three essential characteristics of a successful teacher, namely, positive expectations, classroom management, and lesson mastery, as well as on basic and future "understandings" that are part of the teaching life.

Each week, our Ed Scoops editor highlights education news headlines from around the world.

    Horses Assist Struggling Students
Struggling students have improved at an Ohio school that incorporates working with horses into the curriculum. The horses seem to bring out the best in teens, says a social worker at the school.

    Stereotypes Lower Test Scores
When students take a test in school, how well they perform depends on how smart they are, how hard they have studied and something else: how they see themselves and how others see them.

Phys Ed May Have Little Effect on Kids' Overall Daily Activity
Giving children more opportunities for physical education in school may not increase their overall activity level or be effective in reducing childhood obesity rates, a new study suggests.

Does your district offer teachers bonuses to teach specific subjects or to teach in low-performing schools?

    This Week’s Survey Question
Has your district issued layoff notices to any teaching staff this year?

Ohio Teacher Accused of Preaching in Class Sues District
An Ohio school teacher says in a $1 million lawsuit that his free speech and civil rights were violated. Eighth-grade teacher John Freshwater also says he was harassed and defamed because of his religion.

    Schwarzenegger Pushes for Digital Textbooks
Governor Schwarzenegger intends to make free, open-source digital textbooks available for high school math and science classes, a move that he says will reduce a $350 million state budget line.

Suspensions Ineffective in Improving Students' Behavior
Suspensions are ineffective in improving student discipline and are applied unevenly as a "reflex response" to infractions, according to a Maryland task force. The task force says alternatives must be found.

    New Buses Cut Belching
They look like school buses but they don't smell or sound like them. One Texas school district showed off three of its new propane-powered buses and touted the $303,150 in subsidies they received.

Kids Reap Benefits of Long School Year
Roughly 1,000 schools have expanded their schedules by more than one to two hours a day or 300 hours a year. Some, but not all, of those schools are seeing the benefits of extended school days and years.

Pressuring Parents Helps S.F. Slash Truancy
San Francisco schools showed a 23 percent drop in the number of elementary students skipping classes this year as citywide efforts, including parental prosecution, appeared to be paying off.

    Teachers Snub Scholastic Toys
Scholastic, the longtime children's book publisher, is being sent to detention by some teachers who say its book club catalogs and fairs are too heavy on toys and too light on quality books.

Each week, Education World spotlights books of interest to educators. This week, read a brief summary of two more of our "top 50 books for educators."

    Rules in School
Nothing is more wonderful than a well-run classroom, where students have internalized the classroom rules, and where those rules "add up" to a logical way to maintain a good learning environment. Another great thing is the positive impact the experience of learning to internalize a good set of rules has on the kids beyond the classroom. This book from the folks at The Responsive Classroom® offers a method of thinking about developing rules, including developing consequences for breaking rules. Enjoy! But no talking!

32 Third Graders and One Class Bunny
Teaching is a human job, and this book is a great one for capturing the day-to-day delights of leading a classroom of little kids through a vital year of their young lives. The fact that the book's author reports, as of press time, presumably, that he had sung "Happy Birthday" to students in his classroom 657 times, tells a lot about the larger impact a teacher has. Meantime, the bite-sized essays in this book are perfect for the hurried teaching life.

    Red in the Face

A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of blood in the human body. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, "Now, boys and girls, if I stood on my head the blood would run into it and I would turn red in the face, right?"

All the students nodded in agreement and recognition of this fact.

"Then why is it," the teacher continued, "that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn't run into my feet?"

One quick-thinking student shouted out, "Because your feet aren't empty."

    Off to Jail

It was the end of her day when the police officer was parking her police van in front of the station. As she gathered her equipment, her K-9 partner, Champ, was barking, and she saw a little boy staring in at her.

"Is that a dog you got back there?" the little boy asked.

"It sure is," the officer replied.

Puzzled, the boy looked at her and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, "What'd he do?"

    Grammar Lesson

Teacher: Courtney, can you give me a sentence starting with the word "I"?
    Courtney: I is ...
Teacher: No, Courtney. Always start a sentence with "I am."
Courtney: OK. I am the ninth letter of the alphabet.

    Little Johnny Strikes Again

Mother: How do you like your new English teacher?
Little Johnny: I think she's biased.
    Mother: What do you mean?
Little Johnny: She thinks words can be spelled only one way. her.
